White teeth are a big factor in boosting self-confidence. Luckily, you don’t have to dig deep into your teeth to buy teeth whitening kits or pay for professional treatments. You can scrub or gargle with baking soda to whiten your teeth, but be careful when using this ingredient. To prevent tooth erosion, don’t brush your teeth with baking soda too often and don’t brush your teeth too hard. Keep in mind that discolored teeth can cause dental problems so see your dentist if you haven’t had regular dental checkups.
Brushing Teeth with Baking Soda Paste
Mix baking soda and water in equal proportions. Place teaspoon of baking soda with enough water in a small bowl to make a paste (or to teaspoon of water). A paste made from baking soda and water in equal (or 2:1) ratios is easier to use and more effective than baking soda alone.
Don’t make a paste of baking soda and lemons, strawberries, or other fruit juices. Fruit juices are acidic and can erode tooth enamel, especially when mixed with baking soda or other abrasives.
Brush your teeth with baking soda paste for 1-2 minutes. Dip a soft-bristled toothbrush in the paste, then rub it over your teeth in a circular motion. Brush all parts of your teeth (and not just one spot) for two minutes. Make sure you don’t brush too hard so you don’t hurt your teeth.
Alternatively, use your fingertips to rub the paste on your teeth. Scrub in more circular motions and don’t put too much pressure on the teeth.
If you have receding or receding gums, do not apply baking soda paste to the base of your teeth and gum line. The substance that protects the teeth under the gums is more delicate than enamel and is prone to decay.
Gargle after you finish brushing your teeth. After brushing your teeth for 2 minutes, spit out the paste and rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash. Also rinse your toothbrush thoroughly.
Keep in mind that you should not rinse your mouth after brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste because it can reduce the benefits of this substance. Therefore, do not brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with baking soda after using regular toothpaste to brush your teeth. If you need to rinse off any residual foam after using regular toothpaste, use as little water as possible.
Repeat the treatment twice daily for up to (maximum) 2 weeks. You can only brush your teeth with baking soda paste at most once every two days for 1-2 weeks. After that, limit the treatment to once or twice a week. Because it is abrasive, using baking soda too often can damage your teeth.
Keep in mind that a baking soda treatment cannot replace brushing your teeth with regular toothpaste. Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing and flossing your teeth, and having regular dental checkups are the best ways to keep your teeth healthy.
Before brushing your teeth with baking soda, check with your dentist to make sure your teeth are healthy enough for this treatment. Your teeth may be sensitive to abrasion, while baking soda can cause irreversible tooth erosion.

Mix baking soda and hydrogen peroxide with a concentration of 1-3% in a 2:1 ratio. Hydrogen peroxide can whiten teeth, but you need to use it with care. Make sure you use hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 3% or lower. Follow this treatment at least once a week.
Stop brushing and rinse your mouth with cold water if you feel your mouth burning. Do not follow this method if you have receding or sensitive gums as hydrogen peroxide can cause irritation or damage to the roots of exposed teeth.
Brush your teeth with a mixture of baking soda and fluoride toothpaste. Dispense toothpaste onto a toothbrush, then sprinkle a little baking soda on top. Brush as usual for 2 minutes in smooth circular motions. Swallow up the foam and, if necessary, rinse off any excess foam, rinse your mouth with a small amount of water.
As with the baking soda paste and water, don’t brush your teeth with toothpaste and baking soda too often. Follow this treatment twice a day for 1-2 weeks first, then continue brushing with baking soda (maximum) 1-2 times a week.
You can also buy toothpaste that already contains baking soda. In Indonesia, you can look for products that display the stamp of the IDI (Indonesian Doctors Association) and use them according to the instructions.
If you have sensitive teeth or tooth erosion, avoid toothpastes that contain baking soda or are marketed as teeth whitening products.
Gargle with a mixture of water and baking soda. Combine 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 240 ml of water in a glass, then stir until the baking soda dissolves. Swallow and gargle for 30 minutes, then spit out the mouthwash. Repeat the steps until you have finished one glass of the mixture.
Baking soda rinse water won’t erode your teeth so you can safely use it every day.
